n this issue I have concentrated a number of articles on the subject of bacterial drug resistance. Three articles deal with this subject. Prof. Daniel Elad has presented an extensive survey from his laboratory at the Kimron Institute covering 20 years of experience with a variety of bacteria and antibiotics from varied species of animals. On the clinical side, Dr. Gila Zur has presented an interesting study on increased resistance of Staphylococcus pseudintermedius in canine dermatological conditions. Both these articles should be studied carefully by clinicians as they update us regarding which antibiotics are relevant and which changes have taken place over the years. A special contribution by Drs. Loria and Ben-Natan has been presented on the beta androstenes which have been proposed to boost host immunity in the treatment of infectious diseases to a level that enables the host to resist lethal infection by viruses, bacteria and parasites. In a way this complements the articles on bacterial resistance. The Israel Forum for Laboratory Animals (ILAF) together with the two European organizations (European Society for Laboratory Animal Veterinarians (ESLAV) and the European College for Laboratory Animal Medicine (ECLAM)) had a very
successful joint annual international meeting in Jerusalem in October this year. Dr. Rony Kalman was the Chairman of the Organizing Committee and Prof. Alon Harmelin the Chairman of the Scientific Committee. This is the third international meeting held in Israel on the subject of laboratory animal medicine. Israeli Veterinarians in this field have everything to be proud of including their international recognition, their continuing education program, their specialist program and their high level of veterinary practice in the field of laboratory animals. The abstracts of the meeting are presented in this journal for your interest. My thanks to the overseas authors from Turkey, the Philippines and China. The articles are of interest to a wide range of veterinarians in Israel. Our website (www.ijvm.org.il) is up and running. I recommend all to visit and browse the site. The international response has been good with visits from all over the world. I intend to add more content of articles from previous years of the journal to the site which will increase the number of visits substantially.
