he year 2012 has been a good year for the Israel Journal of Veterinary Medicine, and hopefully 2013 will be even better. As planned, a meeting of the Journal’s Editorial Board took place at the end of October. During this meeting I presented the journal’s progress and objectives. Acceptance to PubMed database is still a prime aspiration, and in the coming few weeks I plan to present and send our application. I think we have reached a stage where our chances are good, and I will certainly update our readers with the result of this endeavor. To date the journal has not demanded any remuneration for publication of articles, not even where colored pictures were included and involved high expenses to the journal. The board has decided to continue this policy, however it has been decided that the printed hard-copy of the journal will from now appear in black-and-white, while the full color version will be available for downloading and printing from the internet site (www.ijvm.org.il). This decision will save the journal a considerable amount of money while at the same time still allow us to continue the policy of accepting articles free of charge. In this way, both the journal as well as the authors will benefit. This month’s journal consists of 14 articles - a record number for the last few years. In the present issue, an excellent review on canine obesity and its role in osteoarthritis has been presented by Dr. Sherry Sanderson. I recommend this article to all, both regarding the health of our pets as well as our own wellbeing. The journal has published a number of articles on Classical Swine Fever. This has become of particular relevance in lieu of the recent outbreak of this disease here in Israel. Two articles from our region of the Mediterranean Basin on Blue Tongue appear in this journal, one from Israel and the other from Turkey. The importance of our region regarding infectious diseases is also highlighted in articles on Klebsiella, Bovine Viral Diarrhea and Cryptococcosis. This year’s cover theme featured photographs of different breeds of cattle. For the last issue of the journal for 2012, I have chosen to highlight the Bonsmara breed - a beef and dual purpose mixed breed developed in South Africa by Prof. Jan Bonsma. I am proud to have I studied under Prof. Bonsma, who made a great impression on me as a student at the University of Pretoria, and wish to honor his memory by presenting the fruits of his research on the cover of this journal. Sadly, Prof. Eli Kutin, a world renowned mycologist, passed away this month. Prof. Kutin was editor of the Israel Journal of Veterinary Medicine for a number of years and played an important role in its progress. We mourn his passing and remember and appreciate his scientific contributions in the field of mycology, and his commitment to the field of veterinary science both in Israel and abroad. May he rest in peace.
